Abraham - one of the most popular characters in the Book of Genesis. Essay

One of the most noted characters in the Book of Genesis was Abraham. He was not only an Old Testament character he was referred to 67 times in the New Testament. Abraham was from the tenth generation of Noah and he was the son of Shem and Terah. There was nothing supernatural or extraordinary about Abraham. At times, he was even known to be dishonest, but for the most part he was a person of great character being courageous, generous, hospitable, and a man of great conviction and compliance to the will of God.
As just mentioned, because at times Abraham was deceptive his faith in God was sometimes questioned. Twice he said that Sarah was his sister to save his own skin (Genesis 2011-12, 1212,12). This wasn't an outright lie because Sarah was his half-sister. In my opinion, he didn't quite shelter her as he should have and it seemed as though he cared more about himself than Sarah. Also, Abraham showed that he didn't trust God's promise to give him a son with Sarah, so he was easily coerced into something that was not God's will marrying Hagar (Genesis 163). Regardless of his beliefs, Abraham was still a man and God wasn't finished with him yet he was still on his journey to sanctification.
On the other hand, he was very courageous. His nephew Lot and his family moved to an area and became involved in local conflicts. Lot was imprisoned and Abraham risked his life to his save him (Genesis 1412-16). Abraham was also a selfless man. Although he could have chosen for himself which country to settle in, he showed great kindness and generosity by giving Lot the first choice (Genesis 138-11). He showed much hospitality to three strangers from the oaks of the Mamre that called upon he and Sarah. He invited the three men to eat, and he killed a calf and prepared it for them (Genesis 181-8). The three men turned out to be angels.
Though Abraham is known for his unwavering faith in God, at times he faltered but he repeatedly displayed remarkable trust this was Abraham's most exceptional characteristic. When the Lord summoned Abraham to forsake his home in promise of a new nation, he did (Genesis 121-4). At God's command and without question, Abraham circumcised every male in his family (Genesis 179-27). Abraham's ultimate test of faith was his willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac (Genesis 221-12). Abraham trusted that God would bring Isaac back from the dead if He had not spared Isaac's life (Genesis 22).
In conclusion, Abraham was from the tenth generation of Noah and he was descended from Shem and his father, Terah. Undoubtedly, he is one of the most popular characters in the Book of Genesis. His name is mentioned in both the New and Old Testaments. Abraham was a courageous, generous, and hospitable man. At times he would be dishonest but he is mostly known for his unwavering faith and devotion to God.
