Abstract
Of Mice and Men is mainly about human imaginings and ambitions and the forces that work alongside them as it is the novel of two men called George and Lennie. We as humans give importance to our existence and to their futures by making dreams. Without imaginings and ambitions, life is an endless stream of days that have little connection or meaning. George and Lennie's American Dream to own a little farm of their own is one of the most important facts of the novel that is reinstated over and over in each chapter. In retrospect, Loneliness is displayed in Of Mice and Men through many characters such as George and Lennie, Crooks and Candy.
George and Lennie are two lonely men who travel around together in search of work. Lennie is a big burden to George so he has to pay extra attention to Lennie because he is mentally ill. Lennie is one of the loneliest characters who lives in his own world and does anything and everything to please George. But nevertheless, both George and Lennie have something that all the no men in the world have and that is true friendship. George is there to help Lennie through life and Lennie is there to help George to keep sane, once their together nothing can stop them. But the thing that George admires most is telling Lennie about their dream ranch. George always tell Lennie that guys like them are the loneliest people in the world but he quoted on themselves that, "With them it aint like that.'' They got a big future ahead of them together hoping one day to own a little ranch all to themselves and live off the fat of the land together.
But George and Lennie weren't the only two lonely men on the ranch. There was another stable buck by the name of Crooks who is known to be the loneliest person on the ranch apart from George and Lennie. Crooks experiences severe lonesomeness because he is a black Negro who lives on a ranch and most of the people who reside on the ranch with him are racist towards him. Crooks lives in his own room by himself stay because the other ranch workers do not like him. Whenever any social activities occur on the ranch he doesn't participate in any and he is always left out of everything. Crooks is so lonely that he reads many books over and over that soon become boring and then he will go back to being lonely once more. Although Crooks doesn't show that he needs some company once in awhile, the book shows that he is so desperate for company and for someone to talk to. As Lennie enters Crook's room he begins talking and talking because he really needed someone to talk to. After the conversation started between Lennie and Crooks, Lennie ran out the room because he was estranged by Lennie's lonesomeness.
