Slavery was caused by economic factors of the English settlers in the late 17th century. Colonists continually tried to allure laborers to the colony. The headright system was to give the indentured servant, a method of becoming independent after a number of years of service. Slavery was caused by economic reasons. Colonists chiefly relied on Indentured Servitude, in order to facilitate their need for labor. The decreasing population combined with a need for a labor force, led colonists to believe that African slaves were the most efficient way to acquire a labor force that would satisfy their needs. Before the 1680s, Indentured Servitude was the primary source of labor in the newly developed colonies. After the 1680s, the population of the Indentured Servants decreased, exponentially. In the 1600s, when tobacco was founded by John Rolfe, tobacco became the main source of income for most of the colonists. The economic prosperity of the colonies was primarily dependent on the amount of tobacco produced. The growing of tobacco, needed a large amount of land, with a large stable work force. The increased demand for a large, stable work force combined with the availability of African slaves, led to the use of slavery in the colonies. Slavery was the backbone of the prosperity of the colonies. Slavery was a course in history, where it was opportune for the colonists to use slavery as a labor force. Morality was not taken into consideration, because of the settlers were only viewing slavery from an economic view, rather than a humanitarian point of view. Slavery was spurred on by the unforgivable greed of the Southern agriculture elite.
The treatment of slaves in the United States varied widely depending on conditions, time, and place. Treatment was generally characterized by brutality, degradation, and inhumanity. Whippings, executions, and rapes were commonplace and slaves were usually denied educational opportunities, such as learning how to read or write. That slowly started to change after the ban on slave trade. The prices of slaves started to rise as new "chattel" was not being brought in all the time. So in order to keep the slaves and make sure they do not run away, owners became less violent with them. But in the end they were still pieces of property.
They were not human beings, just items white people owned. The worst though was in the large plantations like tobacco and cotton. Those slaves received the worst treatment of all. The smaller the farm though the better and more humanely these people were treated.
The slave market purpose and organization are only for one thing, money. All that anyone wanted to do is make money in these types of exchanges. The slave sellers want the most money possible for the slaves, the buyers want the fittest slaves at the cheapest costs to make money, and anyone who the in between helping the Southerners enslave these people wanted money. The organization was very much like an animal auction house. The slaves being the cattle.
