Essay Topic: influence

First and foremost ,the ex-felons should be given re-enfranchisement because they have paid their debt to society by completing their sentences and their right and privileges should be restored. Besides ,even though the people in the prisons have made some mistake or even sometimes the big one during their past lifetime but they are still the citizens of that country ( Chapman,2006 ). It is the responsibility of the state to ensure that the imprisonment system in their country has served punishment or sentences to the ex-felons that can make sure the ex-felons have do their time and pay back their debt to society. Then ,through this method we are increasing the possibility for them to turn their lives around. However ,the ex-felons disenfranchisement laws that has been used by the majority of states in America has prevent people from reintegrating into society after they have paid their debt by serving time in prison. For example ,about 5.8 millions of Americans citizens that are prohibited from voting because of current or previous felony convictions. Hence ,these present more than the individuals populations of 31 United States. Furthermore the reconstruction states used these measures by not allowing the ex-felons to vote just to strip the African Americans of their most fundamental rights and the impact of this felony disenfranchisement on modern communities of colour remains both disproportionate and unacceptable ( Holder,2014 ). This is because ,the measure used by the reconstruction states is very unwise ,it is also unjust and it is not in keeping with the United States and other country democratic values as the laws deserve to be not only reconsidered but repealed. Most of the democratic country such as United States itself come with the democratic value saying that ,for all who have served their terms in prison or jail and have complete their parole or probation and have paid their fines should be pass clear and consistent reform to restore their voting rights. This situation can best be illustrated by thinking that , if a folks have served their time and they have reentered the society then they should be able to vote like others. In addition ,felon disenfranchisement caused the ex-felons staggering in their daily life movement after being released from the prison ( Chapman,2006 ). For instance,in Virginia ,Kentucky and Florida , felon disenfranchisement affects staggering one in five African Americans. This is according to the Sentencing Project of the 5.85 millions Americans subject to felon disenfranchisement and almost half or 2.6 millions are out of the prison. The purpose of punishment is to rehabilitate persons to become functioning members of society upon their release ( Schall,2001 ). Then , there does not need to deprive those who succeed of a fundamental right of citizenship. Moreover ,each states are encourage to made advances in restoring voting rights to felons who have complete parole with the franchise need to be automatically restored after a sentence is complete ( Uggen,2006 ). And this advancement has occur smoothly in Maryland.
