"Are you guys twins?" "How does it feel to have a twin" "Can you read Each other's minds?" Questions a twin is used to hearing daily. Who wants to talk about being a twin all day? No one . For decades twins have been stereotyped. Society is so fascinated by twins due to them have been so rare "only about two percent of births resulted in twins just a couple of decades ago (OSDELL)". Although people may have created an image of twins and how they're "supposed to be" they are mistaken in some ways.
"Twins are always best friends and Soulmates (Osdell)" . Twins are expected to be best
friends due to always being around each other and being each other's closest allies. But this is most times than not, not true. Not all twins are as close as people think. Their strong connections usually tears them apart. This is usually because it's always a competition, wanting their own friends, own relationships etc. . This is what causes their lack of privacy, they are born sharing about everything.. Also the burden of always feeling responsible for a twins feelings and wellbeing. Twins do not get as much attention as a single child.. Reason being, parents tend to think that their attention is not necessary because they have each other to entertain basically leading them to parent each other.
"Twins can read each other's thoughts and feel each other's pain (Osdell)" Probably the most popular statement twins are known for .. and probably the most untrue one. There is no scientific proof showing this to be true. Twins share EPS and a strong empathy for one another, which is might many people might believe "they read each other's minds". Their deep emotional attachment is what helps them connect in most ways and makes them familiar with each other's reactions, habits and routines. This is not proven to be a psychic connection.
"Competition between twins is no different than rivalry between singleton siblings (Osdell)" With twins there is more of a competition than singleton siblings. Since they are always being compared to looking so similar and sometimes being so similar in ways, the competition is a bit more common in twins. "They are in competition with each other before they are even born, fighting for their fair share of nutrients in the womb, says Friedman (Osdell)" .Just like singleton siblings, Twins compete .. wanting to be the alpha for attention.
"There's a good twin and a bad twin in every pair (Ivillage.ca)" This may or may not be
true..Human society likes to see things in pair "good and bad". There doesn't necessarily have to be a bad twin and a good twin in each pair, but there could be. This all depends on personalities and each owns dislikes and likes. It all comes down on how they react in social situations. Labeling twins as "good or bad" damages their relationship. Just like everyone else twins have their own different personalities.
