Essay Topic: work, memory, short

The Baddeley-Hitch Model was developed to help us to understand how short-term memory worked. They took the concept of short-term memory and replaced it with the Working Memory model. Their main theory behind this concept was to explain how working memory divides the labor into the executive control that consequently works with brain activities and active maintenance. Its main purpose is to serve as a holding cell for data. Working Memory is said to hold and apply a variety of stored information for when we are doing simple tasks such as, talking reading, and recognizing objects. Therefore, Baddeley and Hitch took short-term memory and realized that it was just too simple. They discovered that STM held limited amounts of information for only a short period of time with little processing and that it uses the unitary system. Whereas, the working memory doesn't use the unitary store.
Consequently, Working Memory was developed because they thought that short-term memory was lacking some details. Since short-term memory is for storing information for only a short period of time working memory manipulates the information for more complex cognition. Not only did Baddeley-Hitch thought that short-term memory had its issues, but they wanted to develop an alternative model for STM and develop something that will provide a different view on the working memory system. Baddeley-Hitch defined Working Memory as "a limited-capacity system for temporary storage and manipulation of information for complex tasks such as comprehension, learning, and reasoning." (Goldstein, 2015, p. 133)
Baddeley-Hitch's original model was composed of three components that were thought to be dynamic and function separately. These three components included the phonological store, visuospatial sketch pad, and central executive. Phonological Loop is the part of the working memory that deals with words that are spoken or things that are written. It consists of two parts Phonological Store that is the inner ear and it is the part of memory that really deals with speech perception and written materials. Articulatory Control Process is the inner voice and is linked to the speech production. It is used to rehearse and store verbal information from the phonological store. Visuospatial Sketch Pad is the inner eye and it stores and processes information in a visual or spatial form and it is used for navigation. When a person goes from location to another that causes the VSS that is stimulated. The Central Executive is considered to act as the supervisory system that controls the flow of information to and from the other systems. It "is where the major work of working memory occurs" (Goldstein, 2015, p. 135).
In conclusion, this is what I think about what the Baddeley-Hitch Model means to me. Baddeley-Hitch took the concept of what short-term memory store and replaced it with that of the Working Memory. Their theories found reasonable accounts for the word-length effect and the effects of the articulatory suppression and evidence that rehearsal isn't necessary for vocabulary learning, but it is a link between phonological memory and vocabulary learning.
