Essay Topic: statistics
When you think of statistics, you probably think back to high school or college when you took the class. Always wondering when will you use sigma, mean or standard deviation. Statistics isn't only about that, it has to do with percentages and large quantities. From the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Statistic is a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of numerical data. From all the information on the media of presidential elections, medical diagnosis, weather and much more we see that percentages are used so that we are able to understand what is going on in our world.
First, weather forecast use statistics to give us the probability of rain showers, snow, and pollen. Without any of this information we wouldn't be prepared for the weather daily. We need to know probability of rain so that we dress properly. Also need to know the possibility of snow showers, and how that can cause a problem in our travels to work or school. Airports also use probabilities, so they know of dangerous weather that's occurring and stop flights. Our states also rely with probabilities of dangerous weather so that they can call out for 'state of emergency'. Statistical predictions are very helpful with future weather predictions and also for when you're planning family activities.
Medical diagnosis use statistics to predict diseases, how much a drug works on a disease and these predictions can help you protect yourself and stay prepared. We use percentages for how many people are diagnosed and how much effect it has. Medicine that is created is also based on statistics. They need to know how much it'll cure the disease, and its effectiveness. Some diseases come from genetic makeup, and parents need to know the probability of a disease getting passed down to future children of theirs. Statistics are behind every medical study going on in the medical field. Without these statistics we wouldn't know what effects people, how the medicine is working, or how to prevent it.
Before you buy something you always want to make sure you're spending money on a good product. You look at surveys and see that 50% of the people would recommend this product, or something like that. Consumers rely on statistics so that they're able to make the decision of purchasing an object. Many stores rely on consumers, if they're all buying that new television they'll need to order more. This is what helps in our economy, and one of the most important things is our stock market. Stock analysts use statistics for predictions in our economy, and how it'll effect it.
Right now with our presidential election going on, we are seeing
