Among the most common of mental health conditions is post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. Furthermore, PTSD can lead to severe physiological and psychological changes that are significantly increased when this trauma isn't caught in its early stages. These traumas have a great impact on the patient's personalities and perceptions. Therefore, there are different types of treatments that can be implemented accordingly to the patient to improve their psychological condition, and avoid unfavorable results on their mental health.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is something that many of us have heard of before but do not know the main details of, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly known as PTSD, is a serious disorder and is very complex and it can effect variety of people. We may associate PTSD with images of a soldiers returning home from war, where they have experienced many terrifying and traumatic events, although that is not the case. PTSD can be a result of physical abuse, sexual abuse, an accident, natural disaster, or other traumatic life event. I will describe key aspects of PTSD and incorporate examples that will help to expand this information pertaining to this discussion. As we all know PTSD affects more people than one would think, so it is important for us to have better knowledge, so we can learn better ways to cope with and treat it.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychological disorder, with the signs and symptoms being psychological in origin. First, I think it is very important that we have a clear definition of what PTSD is. Getzfeld & Schwartz (2012) defined PTSD as, ""An anxiety disorder that typically occurs after being exposed to a traumatic event such as war or violence warning signs consist of anxiety, the avoidance of stimuli linked with the trauma, flashbacks in which the traumatic event is relived mentally, and a "numbing" of emotional responses" (Getzfeld & Schwartz, 2012).
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can be the direct result of physical or sexual abuse, or a singular event, such as rape. People commonly think that PTSD is most common among soldiers, however it is also very common among individuals that have experienced a natural disaster, a car accident, or any other traumatic event. Case in point, would be the effects on the family members during the aftermath of the world trade centers on 9/11. Furthermore the first responders that were exposed to these highly stressful events on 9/11 in the course of their routine duties. For instance the prolonged, failed rescue and having a partner or a peer killed or seriously injured. These are specific situations that increased their vulnerability to that traumatic stress.
There are many forms of therapies available to patients who suffer from PTSD. These therapies prove to be very effective on many patients, however, some people who have suffered from a traumatic experience may show different symptoms, and thus, not all forms of therapy may work on the patient. Exposure therapies are a form of therapy that the military has used on service members
