Literary Analysis The Story of An hour
Louise was the main character in the story and she wanted to be a free woman and explore her fascinations instead of being a servant to her husband. Men of the 1800's thought the they were supposed to control their wives and not pay much attention to their thoughts because from there understanding, women were taught to only serve their husbands. Louise was becoming aggravated by the way she was being treated in her relationship and thought about removing herself through death. When the information arrived about her husbands death, she cried at that immediate moment and showed she was emotional. Louise knew that she should have felt saddened about the his death but instead she felt freedom. (Chopin 1894). She knew that her body was undergoing heart trouble that caused physical and emotional distress. Louise loved her husband sometimes and abided by the vows of her marriage, but majority of the time she despised the controlled relationship enforced by her husband Brently. Brently may have also been abusive towards Louise because his presence caused her to panic and become instantly depressed. Louise dreaded her marriage with Brently because she was destined to undergo years of depression Brently believed he had the right to impose on Louise's private willpower to fulfill her desires as an individual (Chopin 1894). When Louise initially heard the news about Brently's death, she instantly became happy and escaped through death to a land of freedom in that hour her heart began beating rapidly because of the relief she felt when she heard Brently is dead (Chopin 1894).
Louise was a woman that was after her own heart that desired to be free from Brently. It didn't make any sense to stay in a relationship that you dint want to be in. Louise didn't have that mind set because she thought when you are married you have to stay together until death. Louise knew her relationship didn't feel right because she wasn't happy. Her family probably didn't know she felt that way about Brently. She didn't want to show her happiness when she found out about his death because that wasn't the lady like thing to do. When she felt the relief, it only lasted for a little while because of who she saw. Louise had hoped for life to be long for her. She stood up and opened the door to her sister's irritation. She had a weird look in her eyes, and she carried herself purposefully like in a celebratory fashion contradictory widow. She went down the stairs and was surprised of who she saw. Richards was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. When the door opened, Brenty Mallard stood there with his umbrella. Richards tried to block the view of Brently, but he didn't do it fast enough. Louise was very surprised when she saw him. Soon, the doctors said Louise had died.
