Lone Survivor - a 2013 American biographical war drama film Essay

Recently, war movies have been produced more frequently due to our relations overseas. One in particular is Lone Survivor. Lone Survivor, which is directed by Peter Berg, is a new American classic. It was first a non-fiction novel written by one of the main characters, Marcus Lutrell and then transformed into one of the best war movies in this decade. What makes Lone Survivor so great, is that it has 4 lessons it teaches us. It teaches us about leadership, sacrifices the military takes, and how real war is overseas, and how to never give up through tough times. All of these combine make one classic American war movie. It leaves the audience with a sense of patriotism for this nation. I believe this is one of the best war movies that has recently been produced.
The first lesson it teaches us is about leadership and what it takes to be a great leader. In this movie, Marcus Luttrell, Michael Murphy, Danny Dietz and Matthew Axelson are Navy Seals and are all aware that teamwork is essential, which is why they worked together so well. Without them working together, they would have lost their battle early on. Another trait that makes a great leader is high level of character. These four men have a high level of character Luttrell says, "Anything worth doing is worth over-doing". With that being said, it makes any team want to excel at the next level. Also, to be a great leader we need to look for mentors in life. Mentors give us someone to follow and look up to. Marcus would not have been a great SEAL if he didn't look up to Billy Shelton, who was a former Green Beret. Billy taught Marcus all about life and leadership which eventually helped him on his last mission with his men. Marcus says, "No matter what age you are, find a mentor. There are people willing to help you achieve your goals." All of these traits make great leaders, which made the team work together so well.
The second lesson the audience will learn is about the sacrifice our men and women fighting for us go through. In this movie, the team goes through a long firefight, explosions, seeing each other die, and more and it's all a true story. In the movie, the men are encountered by 3 goat herders. Debating on letting them go or abort the mission, they thought they were just goat herders and let them go and kept to the mission. It ends up they were allies to the Taliban and told them where the SEALs were, which cause the fight. I've talked to service men and women, and what they went through is really true. Everyone dresses the same overseas, so it is hard to know who is the enemy and who is a civilian. Lately, our country seems to be losing its pride and sense of patriotism.
