Risk Factors One of the biggest risk factors of human trafficking is HIV/AIDS. Even though these two have no correlation with each other, a female who is trafficked has an increased exposure to HIV/AIDS. This is due to the fact that they are forced to have multiple sex partners with no protection. Fatigue and weight loss were the most common physical symptoms. Victims get very little to no sleep while being held due to the fact that they are forced to do things for long periods of time.

National Magnitude With the rate that human trafficking is growing, there are several non-profit organizations that are trying to stop this global tragedy. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center is a resource center for victims and survivors of human trafficking. Their mission is to try and provide the victims with the adequate support and mental help to function in daily life now.
Those Nationally Affected. The number of human trafficking cases rise every single day. There is an estimated 14,500-17,000 people every year in the United States that become victims, 50% of the victims are children, and 46% are forced into prostitution.
National Statistical Data. There are many health issue associated with the victims of human trafficking. The majority of the victims are sexually assaulted which leads to many sexually transmitted diseases and when these diseases go untreated there are severe consequences. There is also the emotional and mental abuse that can lead to a lifetime of psychological therapy.
Annual Cost of Issue and Associated Problems. There are many cost associated with human trafficking, some of which include medical cost, funding for interventions against it, psychiatric help for victims and hospital stays for victims. It is expected that there is high medical cost associated with human trafficking, however, it is not always reported so there are not viable statistics that could be found. For funding, the statistics show that in 2013 the US government spent close to 19.4 million dollars internationally on 35 projects to try and help combat the issue. The US government concludes that "Of our recently funded grants, nine projects are global in nature, one project is regional, and the remaining projects target 21 specific countries. Of our recently awarded grants, approximately 45 percent are being implemented by public international organizations the remaining projects will be implemented by foreign and domestic non-governmental organizations, NGO's".

Local Magnitude of this Issue
Those Affected Locally Ohio is one the leading state in the country for human trafficking. "Toledo is currently number four in the nation in terms of the number of arrest, investigations, and rescue of domestic minor sex trafficking victims among U.S. cities" (Northwest Ohio Innocence Lost Task Force, 2009). With the two largest highways (80/90 and I75) in the United States merging in our own backyard, Toledo, Ohio is a hub for human trafficking. Having easy access to these highways, waterways and airports, Toledo is a prime location for this heinous crime.
