Throughout the referral process there are many things a special education team must consider. It is of upmost importance that the impact of student health on academic success is gauged. Some of the aspects of special education require looking into health history and a may need medical diagnosis. School nurses help determine if the student meets the criteria for special education by providing many of these assessments by reviewing medical records, health history and classroom observations.
A school nurse has the ability to deliver consultation and information to the parents and teachers as well as serve as an essential link between the school and the student's individual healthcare providers. The nurse could assist in the writing of 504 plans as well as IEPs, and identify special education health needs and related nursing services that may be required in order for academic progress to occur. Many educators are not familiar with healthcare terms and it is important to include a team member who can interpret relevant medical and health data to the team. A nurse would also be able to assist in implementing, monitoring and carrying out health services to support academic achievement.

Children with health care needs and developmental disabilities have increased considerably over the past twenty-five years. Student's needs in schools are constantly changing. Often, issues come about that need to be addressed. There has been a dramatic increase in the medical needs of students. Many school nurses feel the increased complexity of student's health related educational issues was partially due to laws that were passed for students who require special education services in the general education classroom (Erin Maugha & Rachael Adams, 2011). Schools need to find ways to meet the medical needs of all students attending in order to provide them with a FAPE.
Throughout my years as an educator I have experienced many health and medical issues in my students. Before a student with Epilepsy entered my classroom, I was provided information in regards to my student's condition. I was given a brief overview as well as a medical background and presented with information on "what if "scenarios. I was issued training for administering the proper medicine that in the event of a seizure needs to be given right away. I felt more confident having the student in my classroom knowing that I was informed and prepared should any medical emergency arise.
Today, I teach in a resource room at a local elementary. Not only do I service students with learning disabilities, many of my students with a variety of medical and health impairments such as ADHD, diabetes, asthma and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Medical and health needs have a tendency to change frequently and flexibility is needed to accommodate these students (Eder, 2009). I receive consultation with our districts hearing specialist and was given a special microphone that allows my hearing impaired student to listen closely. I monitor students and provide reminders when their medication needs to be administered.
