Design
Type of research design is experimental, we are trying to find out what kind of organic fertilizer would yield more antioxidant in tomatoes. It's also longitudinal, measuring the difference between the two types of tomatoes due to fertilizer. Organic fertilizer plant vs organic fertilizer animal. We will be measuring the size, appearance, water content, and antioxidant content of the two different fertilizer tomatoes. We will conduct a survey at the end of the experiment to see which tomatoes people prefer, between organic plant fertilizers vs organic fertilizer animal grown tomato. The type of study is intervention, we are comparing antioxidant content in tomatoes between organic fertilizer (plant) and organic fertilizer (animal). Variables are dependent for antioxidant content in tomatoes, vitamin C, vitamin E, flavonoids, and phytochemicals. Also other dependent variables will be measuring are the size of the tomatoes at the end of the experiment, water content, and appearance of the tomatoes. The independent variables are organic fertilizer plant and organic fertilizer animal. The tomatoes that are going to use in this experiment are Burbank's tomatoes. We also are conducting a survey at the end of the experiment to get results on the taste of the tomatoes. We will use about 100 people from Bastyr University.
Data collection
Antioxidant in tomatoes will be collected using ABTS method as described by Re and others, which measures the ability of lipophilic and hydrophilic antioxidants to quench. The appearance of the tomatoes will be measured with an instrument, called the ColorFlex EZ Tomato Spectrophotometer. The ColorFlex EZ Tomato is equipped with the Lycopene index (the phytochemical found in tomatoes) as well as the Hunter L, a, b and the CIE L*, a*, b* color scales, meaning it is brilliant as taking measurements of not only tomato products, but also any other ingredient that may require analysis. Size of the tomatoes will be measured using.. The water content of tomatoes will be measured by drying the tomatoes and measuring the water content that comes out of it. The taste will be measured by our subject in which are Bastyr students.
Subjects
We will do taste survey to people from Bastyr university. Inclusional data, the subjects can be both male and female age of 18-40 years old. It's not a specific on gender more on taste. And the reason for the age is it has been shown that taste buds change after the age of 40years old. We want to make sure our subjects have no limitations. Also, subjects must enjoy tomatoes, dislike of tomatoes can change the outcome results. Exclusional is subject with allergies, people who dislike tomatoes and people are over the age of 40 years of age. The study will introduce the study and then they take a taste survey. They will do this by filling out a form that will demonstrate "Tomatoes A or B is better". Filling out the form will also help with demography, knowing how many applicants we were able to survey. Our goal is 100 bastyrians students.
