The development of Internet in Malaysia began in 1983 when Mohamed Awanglah, who is the Malaysia's first netizen, started working on the idea of the Malaysian Connection with the world through the Internet at University Malaya's laboratory. He was a academic member in Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University Malaya. He has made a similar Internet connection at the end of the year 1984 when he was seconded (support) to the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic System (MIMOS) . The development of MIMOS by the government gave the much needed moral booster for Malaysia's Information Technology (IT) innovators to create a much more improved Internet connection.
The Malaysian Computer Network (RangKom) was established by Mohamed Awanglah 1986, who have made a small computer network with only four dial-up MAYPAC (Malaysian Packet Switched Public Data Network Services) lines to Korea, America, Australia and Netherlands. This Rangkom have been linked to four main Universities in Malaysia, they are the University of Malaya (UM), the University of Science Malaysia (USM), University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM).
In the year of 1990, the Malaysia's first Commercial internet had began when the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems MIMOS now also known as MIMOS Berhad launched Jaring ( Joint Advanced Integrated Networking), the first Malaysian Internet Service Provider (ISP) . During the Sixth Malaysia Plan season (1991-1995) , JARING was connected to the Internet successfully. Ever since then, the market value for commercial and residential Internet access has grown tremendously. There are several number os ISPs in Malaysia which are offering both dial-up and broadband connectivity and in 2002 it was estimated 7.8 million.
