The problem of introvertism in modern society Essay

one third to one half of the population are introverted. (Schocker, 2013) American writer, Susan Cain, says, In our society, the ideal self is bold, gregarious, and comfortable in the spotlight. We like to think that we value individuality, but mostly we admire the type of individual who is comfortable 'putting himself out there. Cain understands that extroverts, people who need higher levels of stimulation, are the ideal persons in our society. On the other hand, introverts, people who prefer less stimulation, are undervalued, overlooked, and look down upon. (Cook, 2012) The question is, why? Why does society belittle introverts? Introverts prepare, ask questions, think before they speak, prefer their close group of friends, work slowly and deliberately, focus on one task at a time, listen more than they talk, prefer to be at home in their pajamas, and they dislike conflict. Also, many introverts dislike small talk, but they enjoy deep discussions. (Cain, 2012) What is wrong with these characteristics? Why do people want to make introverts more extroverted? Maybe it is because people believe that introversion is linked with shyness. Shy introverts do exist, but not every introvert is shy. Shyness is the fear of negative judgement. (Cook, 2012) Not every introvert is afraid of what people may think of them. Most of them just wish that they are away from the people that they are around. This does not make them hermits. Further, it may not be that people dislike introverts, but they just want them to be extroverted. To explain, society has created this place where people who speak their minds and who are not afraid of being in the spotlight are more ideal. The problem with this is, it make introverts feel like they are not good enough. The thing is that, introverts are good enough. Yes, they prefer to listen to people over speaking to them. Yes, they think a lot and they do not always share what they are thinking about, but it is because it is hard for them to speak up and bring attention to themselves. This does not make them any less intelligent or any less bright than extroverts. This is the problem. To further prove that introverts should not change to become more extroverted, one will see how, through amazing influential people from the past and present, the intelligence, talent, and thoughts of the introverts and why the world needs them.

A famous quote by Albert Einstein is, the monotony and solitude of a quiet life stimulates the creative mind. (Einstein, 2015) Einstein understood that silence really opens the mind to artistic inspiration. This was how he developed the theory of relativity. Einstein was one of the most intelligent introverts of all time. He did his best thinking alone. (Schocker, 2013)
