Sports marketing is the center of global sports marketplace. Sports marketing is a practice that relies on the fact that sports activities are globally common and popular amongst people while at the same time sports drives an extraordinary degree of passion and loyalty among the fans. The sports industry is also an industry that has continuously expanded and grown. Sports marketing concentrates on the application of the philosophies of marketing to promote sports events and teams or at times to promote goods and services over sports events. As a director of sports marketing and social media for a professional sports team, there are several functions and duties one will need to engage in. Tasks and functions will include negotiation and preparation of contracts for athletes, strategizing how best to get sponsorship, coordinating and planning sports events, carrying out market research and analysis on the industry, producing promotional material, talking about needs of athletes and sports organizations, observing sports activities and new trends, to oversee the conservation and maintenance of sports facility and finally to oversee the sale of tickets.
As a sports marketer, one is likely to be faced with various situations and challenges that will require special skills. Marketing and promotion of the products of sport is demanding even though the products are heterogeneous and perishable. The perceptions of consumers also vary depending on different aspects. Marketers cannot control factors like weather, injuries, facilities and performance. Additionally, the perceptions of consumers to attend events are affected by quality of the event. Therefore, as marketer, I should be able to have a business sense, negotiating skills, creativity, power of persuasion and competitiveness amongst many other skills. The above skills will assist me as a marketer in the achievement of success.
Similarities and differences between male and females is a factor that a sports director can keep in mind while ensuring that a sports team is adequately marketable to the general public as well as sponsors and stakeholders. Gender and genes are factors that define the nature of human. Human nature is defined by universal behaviors that are as a result of inheritance from the human being ancestors. Due to the common ancestral origin, human share specific traits and behaviors despite the difference when it comes to other features. Sports athletes can behave and act in distinctive ways. Directors should ensure that the athletes are treated according to their own personalities and traits to maintain and develop their interests in improved performances. According to Deaner et al, (2012), the experiment conducted to test on whether evolutionary hypothesis determines the rate at which different sexes participate in sports activities within the high school discovered that male participation in sports were substantially higher compared to the female rate of participation in sports. This could hence be attributed to the difference due to genes and gender. Marketing directors within sports teams should therefore ensure that practice as well as match sessions are organized in ways that consider the difference between the male and female participation degrees.
