Leadership
Having completed the Leadership Style Assessment, I have discovered some important information regarding specific features of my personal leadership approach. Moreover, the test revealed the categories of leadership that best describe my leadership and what challenges and issues might arise from the dominant characteristics. This paper discusses the results of the assessment and identifies characteristics that help to build an appropriate leadership legacy.
According to the final results of the assessment, I have the most characteristics of three types of leaders, including Ambassador, Experienced Guide, and People Mover. Ambassadors are known as leaders who know how to handle stressful situations, even when it means getting involved in conflicts on behalf of others, persuasive, and persistent (Galford & Maruca, 2006). Experienced Guides have the vast experience, get their satisfaction from helping others to see the bigger picture, and does not have to be old while People Movers are known as talent-spotters, motivators, career-builders, and people with parental, nurturing abilities.
These types are great for affecting the people and make collaboration with them very productive because they involve persuasion, experience, and conflict-solving abilities. Therefore, my leadership style will be considered as effective and positive by many because it involves close collaboration, communication, and motivation during the work. Given that it includes People Mover qualities, it is sufficient to suggest that instead of exercising power and authority I will engage in empowering my followers and providing them with more responsibilities and roles in the organization. The qualities of Experienced Guide will help to affect people by providing the opportunity for mentoring and helping to see the bigger picture. Combined, the leadership qualities will impact those with whom I work in a positive and effective manner and help to build a great leadership legacy.
However, there are some characteristics that may work against the effectiveness of my leadership. For example, the persistence of the Ambassadors that often gets them into diffusing situations can place them into positions where they defend the interests of broad constituencies. As the result, such leaders can engage in conflicts and defend benefits of others, which can lead to some negative consequences. There might be a risk in terms of empowering many followers as well. For example, if they receive too much responsibility without guidance from the management, their decisions may be ineffective and confused. Therefore, thorough analysis of the potential negative outcomes is required before making similar decisions.
The Leadership Style Assessment has defined what leadership approaches that are compatible with my personal style of managing people. Ambassador, Experienced Guide, and People Mover were the three categories that described my leadership style and identified its strengths in leading others. Having recognized the characteristics of the leadership, it was possible to identify potential weaknesses that may decrease its effectiveness. Nevertheless, the assessment provided some important information about my natural characteristics as a leader, which should be developed in the future, including empowering of followers, conflict-solving skills, persuasion, persistence, and motivation. These qualities will certainly help to build the positive leadership legacy.
