Totalitarianism Society by George Orwell Essay

In George Orwell's book, 1984, he talks about a totalitarianism society. Totalitarianism is absolute control by the state or a governing branch of a highly centralized institution. Orwell's message about totalitarianism is clearly states in the book as, "War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength." These words are the slogans of the Party in 1984. "War is peace", means that having an enemy keeps the people of the state united. "Freedom is slavery", means that if you are independent you are destined to fail. "Ignorance is strength", means that since the people are clueless in the state it makes the government more powerful.
In a post World War II Europe, Oceania has become the ruling power with the Party as its ruling government and "Big Brother" as the head. The Party does everything to keep control of the people. They plant tele screens everywhere to monitor people, enforce group exercises, and eliminate the importance of the individual. The Party controls people's desires by making food rations, raises the children to love the government, and rebellious people are completely removed and or vaporized from the society. The Party uses fear and diversion to keep everyone in order. "Big Brother" is always watching everyone, making sure they are not breaking rules or trying to rebel. They strive for complete control of the mind. "In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make the claim sooner or later the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality was tacitly denied by their philosophy."(Page 98)
This quote from the books explains how effortlessly the part has the ability to manipulate everyone's mind. Anything they say, the people believe. This also ties into another major theme in the book, which is propaganda. Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
This is how the party controls everyone. They choose what to tell the public even if it isn't accurate. They only tell them what they want to tell them. It allows the Party to control what information gets to the public, which it determines what constitutes reality. Other forms of propaganda in the book are the posters all over the city of "Big Brother" and the slogan "Big Brother is Watching You". They are taught that "Big Brother" is there for protection and to keep them all safe and happy. Citizens of Oceania are all brainwashed into believing that everything the Party does and "Big Brother" is there to help and protect them, when it is all propaganda. Which is the Party's deadliest weapon. With propaganda there is also the surveillance. There are tele screens everywhere, they express constant propaganda also while observing the people. It shows how the totalitarian government uses technology only for their own good.
