Zipper classification based on functions
Introduction Zippers are very important and interesting closures of garment openings. All garments have some sort of opening. They are located around necklines, on the front, around armholes, at the end of sleeves etc of a garment. These openings are finished with special design features to enhance look of the garment.
The design features often take the look of a placket (such as top center, sleeve plackets of shirts etc). The garment openings need to be closed. This is done by a closure. Closures include different types of buttons, hook and loop tape (Velcro), zipper, elastics, etc. Zippers are used to close front openings of jackets, to close front opening of trousers etc. Elastics or elastic laces close waistline and leg openings of trousers, briefs and panties.
Functions No other item in the world fastening garments item as fantastic as zipper. Early age it was very difficult to amalgamate garments product swiftly when zipper was not invented.
Based on functions zipper can be classified like below.
1) Openend [Separator] (O) These zippers are closed using sliders and usually used on jackets and other outerwear's. Openend zippers has separated ends the ending part is joined by a box and pin mechanism provided on the lower end of the zipper.
2) Closedend (C) Closeend zippers are used on jeans, trousers, bags boots etc. These zippers are nonseparating and usually opened and closed by a slider. The bottom stop is made up of a single part and doesn't permit entire separation from the chain.
3) Twoway [Separator] (M) They are used in sportswear, rainwear and sleeping bag. Twoway separating zippers have separated ends as well. The bottom slider permits movement from the bottom of the zipper.
4) Zipper with Double Sliders (C) They are used for overalls and anything else. Twoway (back to back) zippers have sliders on reverse ends when the zipper is closed. These zippers can be opened by pulling the sliders towards each other but cannot be alienated.
5) Zipper with Double Sliders (C) They are mainly used for luggage, bags and backpacks. These zippers have two sliders at the middle of the chain when the zippers are closed. Head to head zippers can be openend by pulling the sliders towards the stops but cannot be divided because the ending parts have two stops that cannot be separated.
How to measure a zipper
Zippers are always measured from "component to component" (end stops), regardless of zipper style. STEP 1 Zip up the zipper.
STEP 2 Measure from the edge of the bottom stop to the top end of the top stop.
Length Tolerance in Zippers Generally zippers can vary when bulk is received due to various factors. Based on JISS3015 following tolerance is acceptable in zipper lengths.
Zipper length
Acceptable tolerance
<30cm (12")
+/5mm (0.2")
>= 30cm (12") or < 60cm (24")
+/ 10mm (0.4")
>= 60cm (24") or < 120cm (47")
+/ 15mm (0.6")
>= 120cm (47")
+/ 3% of the total dimension of zipper
