Problembased learning (PBL) is a center of student's pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving an openended problem. Students get to learn both clear knowledge and thinking strategies.

The problembased learning format originated from the medical school of thought, and is now used in other schools of thought as well.

The Major goals of the Problembased learning are to help students develop stretchable knowledge, successful problem solving skills, strong self learning, functional collaboration skills and intrinsic motivation. Problembased learning is a very important way of active learning.

By Working in groups, students will be able to determine what they already know, what they have to know, and how and where to get new information that may guide them to the resolution of the problem. The performance of the tutor in Problembased learning who is also known as (The Instructor) is to simplify learning by supporting, guiding, and monitoring the learning process.

The tutor must encourage and build a strong confidence in the students, also flexing their understanding to take on the problems.

Basically, from the traditional style of teaching and learning philosophy, Problembased learning represents a paradigm shift. Which is more often based on lectures? The constructs for teaching problembased learning are way different from traditional classroom/lecture teaching.

Barrows has defined the ProblemBased Learning Model as

1. Student Centered Learning

2. Learning is done in Small Student Groups, ideally 610 people

3. Facilitators or Tutors guide the students rather than teach

4. A Problem forms the basis for the organized focus of the group, and stimulates learning

5. The problem is a vehicle for the development of problem solving skills. It stimulates the cognitive process

6. New knowledge is obtained through SelfDirected Learning (SDL).

Problembased learning was invented in the medical school program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in the late 1960s by Howard Barrows and his coworkers then spread around the world. Students were disenchanted and disappointed by the old school medical education, who perceived the huge amount of material presented in the first three years of medical school as having little relevance to the practice of medicine and clinically based medicine.

In order to activate, compensate the learners in seeing the relevance of learning to future roles and maintain a higher level of motivation towards effective learning, also to show the learners the importance of professional and responsible attitudes, The problembased learning curriculum was created and developed.

Problembased learning has gradually been adopted by other medical school programs, adapted for undergraduate instruction, as well as K12. Therefore, The use of Problembased learning has expanded and extended from its initial introduction into medical school programs to include education in many other areas of health sciences, education ,economics, business, social studies, and engineering.

Never the less, by identification of the failures of traditional instruction and the emergence of deeper understandings of how do people get to learn, the use of Problembased learning has been enhanced just like other studentcentered pedagogies.
