Problembased learning (PBL) is a center of student's pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving an openended problem. Students get to learn both clear knowledge and thinking strategies.

The problembased learning format originated from the medical school of thought, and is now used in other schools of thought as well.

The Major goals of the Problembased learning are to help students develop stretchable knowledge, successful problem solving skills, strong self learning, functional collaboration skills and intrinsic motivation. Problembased learning is a very important way of active learning.

By Working in groups, students will be able to determine what they already know, what they have to know, and how and where to get new information that may guide them to the resolution of the problem. Problembased learning was invented in the medical school program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in the late 1960s by Howard Barrows and his coworkers then spread around the world. Students were disenchanted and disappointed by the old school medical education, who perceived the huge amount of material presented in the first three years of medical school as having little relevance to the practice of medicine and clinically based medicine.
